چکیده

This paper presents a new approximation method for localized (`bumpya) steady state activation patterns in truly nonlinear neural "eld equations. The method is applied to models for orientation tuning in V1 simple cells where it allows to study the impact of nonlinear rate-functions on tuning properties and a derivation of explicit formulas for response amplitudes and tuning widths in dependence of network parameters and stimulus properties. 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Illusions in the Ring Model of visual orientation selectivity

The Ring Model of orientation tuning is a dynamical model of a hypercolumn of visual area V1 in the human neocortex that has been designed to account for the experimentally observed orientation tuning curves by local, i.e., cortico-cortical computations. The tuning curves are stationary, i.e. time independent, solutions of this dynamical model. One important assumption underlying the Ring Model...

Dynamics of Orientation Tuning in Cat V1 Neurons Depend on Location Within Layers and Orientation Maps

Analysis of the timecourse of the orientation tuning of responses in primary visual cortex (V1) can provide insight into the circuitry underlying tuning. Several studies have examined the temporal evolution of orientation selectivity in V1 neurons, but there is no consensus regarding the stability of orientation tuning properties over the timecourse of the response. We have used reverse-correla...

Orientation Tuning Properties of Simple Cells in Area V1 Derived from an Approximate Analysis of Nonlinear Neural Field Models

We present a general approximation method for the mathematical analysis of spatially localized steady-state solutions in nonlinear neural field models. These models comprise several layers of excitatory and inhibitory cells. Coupling kernels between and inside layers are assumed to be gaussian shaped. In response to spatially localized (i.e., tuned) inputs, such networks typically reveal statio...

Local correlation-based circuitry can account for responses to multi-grating stimuli in a model of cat V1.

In cortical simple cells of cat striate cortex, the response to a visual stimulus of the preferred orientation is partially suppressed by simultaneous presentation of a stimulus at the orthogonal orientation, an effect known as "cross-orientation inhibition." It has been argued that this is due to the presence of inhibitory connections between cells tuned for different orientations, but intrace...
